[Review] Amber Liu No More Sad Songs Tour 2024 in Singapore
On 20th March, global pop superstar Amber Liu headlined her first ever solo show in Singapore at The Theatre at Mediacorp. Starting her tour in Tokyo, she has since done 26 shows, performing in multiple countries in Southeast Asia followed by China, Down Under to Australia, New Zealand and finally to her last stop of the Asia leg of this tour in Singapore.
The night started off on a high note with ‘Easier’, ‘Stay Calm’, ‘Hands Behind My Back’ and ‘Dusk till Dawn’. With two backup dancers by her side, Amber took charge of the stage, captivating the audience with her infectious melodies and synchronised moves. During her opening introduction, she was surprised to learn that there were fans who attended over 10 shows of this current tour. She also mentioned how she adored Singapore’s sunny and humid weather, and set the mood for the night, saying the number one and only rule for this show was for her fans to just be themselves and enjoy the concert.
We could feel Amber’s genuine love and passion for what she was doing when she performed ‘Curiosity’, ‘Neon’, ‘ILY’ and ‘Make it Better’, and ‘I Love Somebody’. We especially enjoyed the friendly banter she had with her band and dancers, making them look like a close-knit family as she even got them to sing the taglines of her song ‘3 Million Years’.

To thank her fans for supporting her music and coming to her show, she did a quick live raffle and gifted 2 lucky members of the audience with an exclusive limited-edition Lululemon collaboration hoodie personally designed by herself.
Much to the fans’ delight, she also performed unreleased tracks ‘Laser Tag’ and even a spontaneous acoustic version of ‘Taste of You’ for the first time. Kudos to her band who were flawlessly able to adapt to her request on a whim on stage!
Expressing that she pours her soul into the songs she creates, she reminded her fans how thankful she was for them and that no matter how dark things may seem there would be a light at the end of the tunnel and that they are always loved. This made a smooth transition to a heartstring-tugging ballad section of the night, where she slowed things down with ‘Lately’, ‘Numb’, ’Hate Myself’, ‘Blue’ and Can’t Go Yet’.

Her positive and inspiring energy left a deep impression on us, as she encouraged her audience to sing the lyrics of ‘No More Sad Songs’ for themselves. By the end of the night, we had the chorus stuck in our heads:
Not gonna give up, won't let you give up
Not gonna give up, no more sad songs
As we moved on to the final parts of the night, her energy never let up, as she rocked to ‘Don’t Dance’, ‘Countdown’ and crowd favourite ‘Other People’. Having followed Amber’s career for a long time, encore songs ‘Shake that Brass’ and ‘Paradise’ were our personal favourites. During the encore, fans organised a banner event that pleasantly surprised Amber. You could tell how touch and appreciative she was as she momentarily stared back to the crowd in silence with a look of adoration on her face.

Amber's "No More Sad Songs" concert in Singapore served as a reminder of how one's passion for music and performance can inspire and bring joy to countless individuals, devoid of any fuss and frills. We look forward to seeing Amber’s growth as an artist and hopefully on our sunny island again soon!
