[Review] D&E DELIGHT PARTY FANCON IN SINGAPORE
The Pearl Sapphire Blue ocean shone especially bright on 8th November, as SG ELFs waved their lightsticks in anticipation of D&E’s return to Singapore, this time as a subunit rather than with Super Junior.
A synchronized chorus of notes from the live band and bright lights lit up the stage, as the duo emerged from the top, starting the night with ‘ZERO’ and ‘B.A.D’. They were clearly dressed to impress, both donning bedazzled suits that sparkled as the lights hit them. The combination of live music, pyrotechnics and their amazing dance and vocal skills brought the atmosphere to an all time high as they dominated the stage with ‘Danger’.

They flaunted their knowledge of Singlish, with Eunhyuk immediately starting his greeting with “Nice to meet you laaa!”. Musing that they’ve been here often as a group, but it was only their first time here as a duo, they shared their hopes of returning again for another concert next year.
Clearly big fans of Chilli and Pepper crabs, Eunhyuk also reminiscenced the times where he visited restaurants and pubs around the Singapore River where he had great meals and drinks with the Super Junior members when they came for their past concerts. “Singapore ELFs sent us so much good food to our waiting room, thank you so much! We had a really good dinner.” Donghae and Eunhyuk were especially chatty, having conversations with ELFs like long time friends, and it was endearing to witness the relationship they had with their fans.
Donghae and Eunhyuk also showed off their closeness to their live band as they introduced each member individually. Of course, they didn’t miss out on the opportunity to tease them, mocking their choice of introduction songs and even requesting for “more exciting music”. Their pianist played a snippet of Super Mario’s theme song, and Donghae and Eunhyuk matched his energy by bouncing around like the Mario brothers. The chemistry between the members and the band was through the roof, even sparking absurd requests from Eunhyuk.
“I want you to play a song that matches this storyline”, he told their drummer. “The Singapore ELFs are hungry and really miss D&E. They are really tired, but went into the sea, caught a crab, met D&E and passed them a crab (the members previously joked about catching crabs because ELFs told them how expensive they were to buy). Please express this with your drums”. Amazingly, their drummer went along and showcased his skills despite the unexpected challenge, and Donghae and Eunhyuk were visibly impressed.

After the introduction, D&E flaunted their vocals with 'Sunrise' and '‘Bout You'. They teased the fans for looking serious and overly comfortable, with Donghae even saying “it felt like we were preparing and doing an exam in front of (the fans). I really want to remove your chairs! (so that they could stand up)”.
Eunhyuk’s cheeky personality shone through as he joked with another fan, “Why are you asking us if you can go to the washroom? You’re really going now? Just go for it, go, go now.” cueing laughter from the fans.

The next segment featured a minigame, where D&E had 99 seconds to complete a series of challenges. Four were individual, with the last one involving teamwork. They had to complete five stones, stacking five ice cream toys, catch sharks and finish tic-tac-toe individually. The group activity involved them biting on a spoon and passing the table tennis ball to one another.
“If we fail, we’ll stop the show and go home. The lights will go off and we can go catch some crabs.” They were clearly having a fun time bonding with ELFs, even boasting that “we’ll do very well, just sit back, relax and watch us”.
Two failed attempts later (Donghae was seriously struggling with the ‘overly sensitive’ shark), Eunhyuk comically threw a tantrum. “I HATE ICE CREAM”, he yelled, after failing to stack the ice creams resulting in their second failure. “These games are weird, can we change the rules? Let’s just do all the challenges together”. While they were close to succeeding, they ultimately messed up their third attempt, which ended with Eunhyuk slamming (then expertly playing) the keyboard in anger while Donghae joined him on the drums.

In a bid to know the fans better, they took out a board with handwritten notes plastered on them. Fans had the opportunity to pen down their thoughts for the duo, which were not in vain as they read them out on stage. Eunhyuk flaunted his English as he read an entire letter out in English, while conversing with the fan who wrote it.
They had their fun getting to know the fans better, from celebrating their birthdays to where they’re from and even learning about their husband and child. “Ahh you came for our concert in Korea and left your husband and daughter behind? Are you even coming to Vancouver? To what extent are you going to follow us, please go home to your baby and husband!”
Everyone definitely had a good time, as D&E playfully teased the fans. They built such a casual and friendly atmosphere, and it was clear that they really loved ELFs and tried their best to engage with as many fans as possible.

The duo could clearly do it all, because this led up to their rendition of “Still You”, “Gloomy” and “Growing Pains”. The seamless transition from their cheeky selves to belting out notes to emotional ballads really emphasized their versatility and talent.
Returning to the stage with “Home”, they managed to spend more time chatting with the fans. “It was our 18th Anniversary fanmeet last week. How many of you guys were there? It’s been a while since all the Super Junior members gathered and had a fanmeeting, and we had so much fun!” Hinting at their departure from their former company, Eunhyuk also cheekily mentioned “Kyuhyun, Donghae and I.. FOREVER SM!”
‘Need You’, ‘I Wanna Dance’ and ‘Oppa Oppa’ got the fans on their feet, and the atmosphere was at an all time high. When D&E returned backstage once again, ELFs started chanting “encore”, and the Star Theatre was lit up in a beautiful, luminous blue as the lightsticks bobbed in unison.
To everyone’s surprise, Donghae and Eunhyuk reappeared, but this time from the back door of the hall while singing ‘Share My Love’. It was an unexpected gift, as they got to be closer to the fans, and they took their time saying hi and greeting the fans around the hall. Although simple, it was a really sweet gesture and showed how much they prioritized giving their fans the best experience possible.
This was followed by nostalgic and legendary bops from Super Junior, from ‘Mamacita’ to ‘Sorry Sorry’ and even ‘Bonamana’ that left the fans ecstatic. That wasn’t the end, Donghae revealed their upcoming schedules next year, with “we’re going to have many concerts next year, so please stay tuned. We’re also preparing a lot of gifts for you, so look forward to that.”
“There are only a few more months left of 2023, please stay healthy”, he reiterated, “Husbands, please take care of your wives. A lot of people brought their children today, since they’re our ELFs too, please raise them well.” Eunhyuk added with “If we’re Super Junior, they’re ELF juniors. Take good care of them!”

Eunhyuk also shared his parting words. While he wasn’t able to get a good night’s sleep due to his filming schedule the night before, he felt energized and happy when he met SG ELFs. “Let’s never leave each other, and support each other always. Indeed, ELFs give us strength!”.
They ended the night with Eunhyuk revealing the biggest spoiler yet, “I didn’t even discuss this with Donghae, but I guess I’ll reveal it myself”. “D&E will release a new album next year, and we’re looking at releasing it in February or March. We’ll give you a gift of our FULL album of D&E. Our talented producer, Lee Dong Hae, has been creating so many good songs, they’re SO good!”.
“These kinds of spoilers wouldn’t have been possible with SM, but I’m the CEO so why not just do it.” he joked, “I’ll prepare a lot to create a great album with the best songs!” The fanmeet was coming to an end, but not before they took a photo and watched a video montage that was made with love from SG ELFs.
Taking the opportunity to tease the fans one last time, they joked about anticipating a video montage every time they return to Singapore, since the fans have already done it once. “We’ll be looking forward to it now! If you don’t do it, we’ll be sad because you’ve set this expectation.”
With one final request from Donghae to create a ‘Reel’ to remember the moment, and with their last song, 'Hello', they bade the fans farewell. We hope to see them again soon, hopefully next year with their new album!
