Hwang Chi yeul - 'starry night' Concert in singapore
South Korean solo singer, Hwang Chi Yeul, held his fanmeet at The Max Pavillion last Saturday. As the lights dimmed, the multi-coloured light sticks lit up the room and cheers erupted as Hwang Chi Yeul took the stage. The talented man showed off his sleek dance moves right from the first song and the fans went wild with his fluid body waves.
‘A Daily Song’ was a familiar tune, and evidently a crowd favourite as everyone sang along even despite the Korean lyrics. Through the emotional song, he showed off his powerful vocals, hitting the high notes and singing with amazing vibrato. This was followed by ‘Please’, yet another emotional ballad.
During his ments, the Hwang Chi Yeul made the effort to converse in Chinese initially, but soon switched to Korean when he realised that the translator was translating his chinese.
“Is it because it’s hard to understand?”, he jokingly asked, which prompted the reply of ‘a little’! This remark resulted in laughs from both the singer and the audience. Despite this, he continued speaking in Chinese, in a bid to be closer to the fans. This also added a more personal touch, as it shows how much effort he put into learning chinese, despite being a native Korean so as to converse on a more personal level with his fans.
He thanked his fans for their support and mentioned that they were his tutors when it came to the Chinese language, and said that he wouldn’t have improved without their help. In return, he would be their Korean tutor.

As a lead up to his next song, he asked if any fans came along with their wives or girlfriends. He then asked the cameras to zoom in on them and made the motion of ‘I’m watching you’ as he tasked the guys to do ‘aegyo’, or act cute in front of their significant other. He then performed ‘Angle’ and ‘Look At You’, complete with cute choreography and tons of energy.
‘Now that you guys are all hyped up, I’m sad to say that the next song is a ballad, but do sing along!’ He then proceeded to sing ‘You Are My Everything’, the popular OST in hit drama ‘Descendants of the Sun’, and did exceedingly well, especially considering that the original singer is a female.

He also asked if anyone broke up recently, as a lead in to his next song and several people raised their hands. When he asked for the reason of their breakup, they wittily replied, ‘because of you’. Hwang Chi Yeul appeared to be shocked and embarrassed at the same time, but called two particular fans forward and presented them a towel and a hug each, as he ‘felt sorry for them’.
‘Do you know what are the perks of dating me?’ He asked. ‘We’ll never break up!’

His fanservice was also top notch. When he noticed children in the crowd, he motioned for one of the boys to go up to the front, and passed him a waterbottle. When fans screamed at him to toss the bottle he was drinking from, he jokingly said ‘it’s mine though..’ but rolled it to them anyway. He also tossed a few towels, one of which landed right in our area.
His vocals are of a whole new league, as his voice was stable throughout despite the little breaks he took. Considering that he sang for close to two hours straight, it really deserves some applause!
At one point, he lead the fans in singing a part of his song. This involved singing in tune to a high note with variations in note and rhythm. When the first attempt resulted in failure, he made a ‘shocked-disappointed’ expression and jokingly said in chinese ‘一点点(yi dian dian)’, implying that they were a little off.

He then guided them through the notes once more and tried again and when the fans got it wrong once more, he laughed it off with ‘ok! 你们可以,你们是歌手!特别难!(Ni men ke yi, ni men shi ge shou, te bie nan!)’. He praised them for being equivalent to singers and that the song was indeed hard to follow.
Thereafter, he sang a verse from ‘A Daily Song’ and was visibly surprised when the fans followed along extremely well with accurate Korean. “Hold on a second, aren’t you Chinese? How do you sing Korean so well?” he quipped, looking around in amazement.
He also had a segment where his dancers had individual dance times to show off their moves. The highlight however, was when a particular male dancer came up on stage while crossdressing. Even Hwang Chi Yeul himself was amused at the sight, as he chuckled while returning on stage, adding that the dancer wanted to show off a less serious front and bring happiness to the fans in the form of laughter. Kudos to him for his efforts!
After several songs, and a few VCRs in between, a particularly adorable interview video. The singer was asked a few questions, where he had to place his hand on a lie detector to judge the truthfulness behind his answers. If it was a lie, he would then be shocked. When asked if he would date a fan, his answer was ‘Yes, I don’t see a reason I shouldn’t!”, he was greeted with a large zap, and he loudly exclaimed ‘OWWW that’s hot! This machine is broken!!!’
The crowd laughed along as he replied to the question ‘Do the fans love you for your voice or your abs?’ to which he confidently said ‘My voice of course!’ and was zapped in return. He looked genuinely shocked and once again blamed it on the faulty machine.
In the end, the staff helped to reset the machine and he gave a couple more tries. This time, he was asked the same question once again, about whether he would date a fan. It reflected that his answer, ‘Yes’, was the truth and the crowd cooed ‘awwwww’ in unison. When asked the question about his abs, he got zapped once again and everyone laughed along. ‘It’s possible, people have different tastes’. He sounded like he was trying to convince himself in an attempt to get over the shock.

Hwang Chi Yeul returned on stage with ‘Burning Fire’, yet another dance song, now clad in a striking yellow and red top and a red cap. He also donned a long, chained necklace as he wanted to be ‘cool like Bruno Mars’.
He then asked the fans once again if they preferred his voice or his abs, and the majority screamed ‘ABS!!!’ and the singer laughed. ‘As I don’t really have much time to exercise right now, they’ve disappeared.’ As though to prove his point, he then lifted up his shirt to check and the fans went hysteric. This spurred him on and he showed off his abs once again, much to the delight of the fans.
As a joke, he also re-enacted how people would greet him, by saying hi while looking at his abs instead of his face. His playful nature got the fans laughing many times throughout the concert.
The singer was always very real in his conversations, and it felt like he treated everyone more like his friends than his fans, which was heartwarming. Conversations were heartfelt and genuine and it was a pleasant atmosphere throughout.
Hwang Chi Yeul continued with ‘The Only Star’ and was cutely shocked when the fans chanted his name in rhythm with the instrumentals. The thoughtful man even made his way down to the audience and tried to walk to the rows further behind, as he wanted to be closer to everyone. Many got to see him up close as he walked amongst the audience.

This was followed with ‘Be Back’ where he sang his heart out and expressed the overflowing emotions behind the song. He left the stage, and returned after loud, united chants demanding for an encore. Taking the stage with a remix of ‘Bang Bang Bang’ he got the audience more hyped than ever as everyone cheered along to the familiar lyrics.
Hwang Chi Yeul definitely didn’t disappoint throughout the entire concert and left everyone longing for more. We’re sure everyone’s waiting for the next time he returns to Singapore once again, hopefully soon!
