CN BLUe 'Between us' in singapore
CN Blue is currently doing their Asia Tour called “Between - Us”, which is a comeback for their seventh mini album, “7℃N”. Their concerts will be held in six different countries and Singapore was their first stop for the tour! It was held on 1st July 2017, 7pm at Zepp@BigBox Singapore. Despite it being held in a relatively smaller location as compared to their regular concerts, the atmosphere and quality of the concert was not compromised at all.
The quartet definitely proved that they can hold a simple yet exciting concert without having to put on any fancy outfits and having any backup dancers. In fact, they only changed their outfit once, before the encore and their shirts were all pretty basic, nothing dressy.
The concert started off with a high note as their tour logo flashed on the screen, together with bright lights and loud music. BOICEs screamed to welcome them on stage as the four members appeared on stage and walked casually to their instruments, before starting off with “Radio”. We could see the charming sides of all the members as the effortlessly played their respective instruments, with some of them even switching instruments midway.

The concert reached an all high when CN Blue performed “Can’t Stop” as fans shouted the lyrics together with the members. Since the stage had three extensions, there were plenty of space for the members to get closer to their fans and interact with them. Jong Hyun and Jung Shin stood mainly at the right and left parts of the stage respectively, while Min Hyuk, the drummer, remained at the top of centre stage.
Yong Hwa, the leader and lead vocalist took it into his hands to hype up the fans as he ran down the middle extended stage. Fans screamed even louder than before as they saw him close up. Even though he was constantly running around, he definitely didn’t appear exhausted, and was still able to hit all the notes perfectly. At one point in time, he even jumped off the stage to get closer to the fans at standing pen, even giving them the chance to hi five him. Everyone was ecstatic with his constant fanservice.

Yong Hwa also showed his love for Singapore and our culture by speaking some Singlish as he was conversing with the audience. He loved using the word “Shiok” and asked the fans if the concert was “Shiok”. The group also tried to incorporate our typical Singaporean slang such as “la”. It was funny and heartening that they put in effort to interact with us. On top of this, the members also spoke to the audience in English throughout, without the help of any translators, which made the concert more intimate between the band and the audiences. Yong Hwa also wittily added the words “I love Singapore” into some of the songs to make it extra special for the fans.
In between the concert, the band sang some good old classics such as “Love Girl” and “I’m Sorry” which we still miss very much. The song “Wake up” was played for a good 10 minutes as the fans chanted along throughout and it really helped to build up the atmosphere. They even played varying pitches of “Wake Up”, which prompted the fans to match the pitch, resulting in close-to-ultrasonic waves of sound being produced. The members looked amused and happy that the fans were having fun and singing along.
When it comes to fanservice, all of the members were top notch. Jong Hyun posed for the fans and even sat at the side of the stage, closer to the fans as he strummed the guitar, while staring endearingly at them. Jung Shin constantly encouraged the fans to sing along, and gave sweet smiles, while Min Hyuk waved and gave a loving smile when he eventually came to the extended stage for the acoustic performance. We also saw the cheeky side of Yonghwa as he stared into the eyes of several fans and even winked at some of them with a mischievous smile.
The members are also playful with each other on stage as they started jumping and playing with each other on stage which made it look like they were having as much fun as the audience was. Yonghwa also asked the audience several times if they were happy and assured us that he was feeling very happy as well.
Interactions between the members cannot be missed as well, and we could see various members coming together with cute interactions. Yong Hwa asked Jung Shin if he was feeling “Happy”, as he sang the song “Happy” by Pharrell Williams, to which Jung Shin jokingly replied “no”, but he laughed afterwards and agreed that he was indeed feeling very happy. Jong Hyun responded with accurate notes in response to Yong Hwa playing a slightly modified version of “Wake Up”, even when he added complicated notes in between. They also encouraged one another to sing, especially during the acoustic segment, where we finally heard the voice of Min Hyuk, which got the fans gushing with adoration.

Yonghwa also showcased his talent as he was able to switch between several instruments for different songs, playing the keyboard for “It’s you”, electric guitar for “Wake up” and acoustic guitar for “Love”. He even managed to create music by pulling the guitar against the microphone stand, which awed the fans. Jungshin seemed to able to play the bass effortlessly with his long fingers and was also always smiling brightly to the audience.
All good things have to come to an end, and the members eventually said that it was their last song. Fans screamed enthusiastically as the intro to “Between Us”, their latest title track played. The audience and the band were united as one as everyone sung along to the lyrics, wanting to enjoy the moment as much as possible before the band left.
However, it was not over as even after the band left the stage, the lights remained dimmed and the audience immediately chanted “CN BLUE!” “CN BLUE!” with gusto to get the band back on stage.
The members reappeared clad in their tour t-shirt, and walked down the middle extended stage together with acoustic instruments. Yong Hwa shouted the lyrics to “Okey Dokey” by Mino and Zico and the fans echoed after him, and he even asked if they wanted to hear them perform the song. Everyone screamed yes, which prompted him to hum another melody. He asked the fans once again if they wanted to hear them perform that song, and if they knew what song it was. The fans said no and he replied “yeah, I don’t know too”, implying that he made it up to make fun of the fans. Although it was just a simple way to be more personal with the fans, it was great that he put in the effort to even make small jokes and play around with them.

The band settled in and played the acoustic version of “Manito”, which still lingers in our heads even now, as it was a perfect blend of the sound of the acoustic instruments and their soothing voices. Yong Hwa prompted all the members to sing a line of the song, which meant “I love you” in Korean, and each member pointed at different parts of the audience, prompting loud screams from every direction they pointed at. He even came up with three different variations of hearts which he shot to all the fans.
The concert ended off with their last song, “Forever Young”. With the members saying that they would stay young forever, and even promising that they would be forever be back in Singapore. Seemingly endless confetti was cascading down onto the fans, replicating snowflakes, which created a mesmerising scene.
The song ended with a perfect harmony of four voices, reflecting the team synergy between the four members as they performed the concert together. They clearly prioritized the quality of their music and the energy they bring to their fans. Heads up to them for barely having any intervals throughout the concert, while still maintaining top notch vocals. We could feel their immense passion for music, and hear it in their music. They really performed with their heart and soul and their energy was infectious.
Although everyone was reluctant to bid farewell to the band, we definitely anticipate their return. We hope to see them again, soon.
