exo 'exordium' in singapore
Korean boyband EXO performed at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on 2 April 2017.
Even before the show started, it was evident that there was much excitement and enthusiasm for the long-awaited Korean boy band, EXO, to hit the stage. Fans were singing along passionately to the pre-show playlist, which included songs like “Don’t Go” and “Peterpan” that were performed in their previous concert on our Sunny Island. When the lights dimmed, the entire stadium turned into a mesmerising sea of silver lights. The screams amplified and the fans, EXO-Ls, cheered loudly to express their love for the group.
The concert started with EXO performing a few of their title songs, with the addition of their latest hit, Monster, and the chants from the fans were deafening. The boys then introduced themselves, with their signature “We are one! Hello, we are EXO”, with all the members taking turns to greet the fans. They expressed their happiness of being able to return to Singapore and encouraged everyone to look forward to the rest of the concert.
The EXO-Ls were then greeted with the sight of the members’ charismatic water stage and body waves. However, it was not until “Artificial Love”, one of the most anticipated stages, when the cheers reached its peak, as the members danced sensually with their canes, leaving the fans thirsting for more.

EXO then reappeared on stage, jumping out from large furniture as they sang “Unfair” and “Tender Love” before serenading the fans with an acoustic medley of some of their songs, accompanied by Chanyeol’s on the guitar. He was playing so overly-enthusiastically that the members had to tell him “too much” and “that’s enough”. The main vocalist, D.O., started off this segment with his smooth vocals and ad-libs to “My Lady” and Baekhyun echoed after him, which took the fans by surprise. Sehun also dropped his microphone midway and D.O. cracked his voice while hitting a high note. Both looked absolutely mortified but laughed it off together with the other members and fans. This was followed by the dance performance of Lady Luck by the main dancers, Sehun and Kai, as the members sang along, before the whole group performed together.
“One and Only” was a perfect combination of vocals and dance. Sehun and Kai showed off their moves once again, this time charismatically dancing as make-shift rain poured on them. The vocalists proceeded to wow the fans with their soothing vocals as they sang “Stronger”.
Elf EXO then dominated the stage in their red, blue and green outfits as they danced cutely along to songs like “365”, “Heaven” and “XOXO”. Thereafter, they overdosed their fans by transforming into cool dancing machines. When performing “Lightsabre”, they danced while swinging real lightsabres as water rained on them.
In the next talk segment, Suho, Chen, Baekhyun and D.O. shared about their love for chilli crab (and pepper crab). Suho proclaimed that the Singapore night view was beautiful but “you guys (the fans) are still the best!”, evoking a mix of groans and “awws” in response to his typical cheesy statement. Even Baekhyun said that his “head to toe, small” implying that he was cringing very hard from the statement.
They also noticed Singapore’s birthday event prepared specially for Sehun, and asked if we were singing in English. They started off the singing and the fans followed along, before they shouted “No, not yet! He can hear us backstage”, and they proceeded to cover up the surprise by beautifully harmonising their voices together with the fans.
When Sehun finally re-appeared after his costume change, both EXO and EXO-Ls sang the English version of “Happy Birthday” while waving the “Happy Birthday Vivi’s Dad” banner and he happily replied “Thank You”. The fans then sang the Korean version as well, nearly moving Sehun to tears. Xiumin showed off his humour when he mimicked the fans’ screams and Chanyeol showed off his bowling skills.
The entire stadium then transformed into a club as Xiumin, Chanyeol and Sehun took the stage with “Do it Together”. The fans jumped and screamed together with EXO as they performed “Drop That”, before doing their signature lightstick-waving transition to “Let Out the Beast”, “Lucky” and “Run”.

EXO left the stage, but the fans knew that it wasn’t the end. “Encore” was chanted and when the final video was played, the fans sang along to “Sing For You”, which was a touching sight as everyone was united in their love for EXO.
After performing “Growl”, the stage became EXO’s playground as the members picked up different toys, including bubbles and even water guns. Not only did they attack one another but also the fans, as Baekhyun shot water at the fans and stuck his tongue out to tease them. It was a pity that the concert had to come to an end, but the members reassured the fans that they would come back soon with new performances and songs and bade their final farewells.

Although it was a short 3 hours, it was nonetheless memorable, and probably one of the best concerts EXO has had in Singapore so far. Be it cute, sexy, cool or mesmerising performances, they have done it all and definitely did not disappoint, which only leaves us all in anticipation of what their next concert will hold.
